WILL COTTON "LUILKKERLAND" 2002, OIL ON LINEN, 48" x 60"
On 7 September 2002 the Mary Boone Gallery will open at its Chelsea location an exhibition of new paintings by WILL COTTON.
The paintings in the show were completed over the past few months in Giverny, France, where Will Cotton worked under a residency grant from the Monet Foundation. Inspired by his immersion in Monet's idealized setting, Cotton now includes figures within the fantasy landscapes he creates.
From Cotton's familiar pools of custard or hills of pastry, young girls gorge themselves or lie tired and sated; their vacant expressions convey either bliss or nausea. With the girls - themselves objects of desire - Cotton offers a glimpse of what life might be like in this world of sugary excess. Themes of temptation and indulgence remain central to Cotton's paintings.
The exhibition, at 541 West 24 Street, will run through 19 October 2002. Please contact the Gallery if we can be of further assistance, or visit the Gallery's website: www.maryboonegallery.com.
Sincerely,
Ron Warren
